BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Bryan police and other law enforcement responded early Saturday to a shooting between two groups of individuals reported in the 700 block of Dansby Street. The shooting happened at around 1:15 a.m. Saturday, near the Federal Prison Camp located in Bryan.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons said the incident was treated as an active shooter situation by prison staff and guards. It clarified the shooting involved rival gangs and started off the prison’s grounds. No staff or inmates were hurt. Bryan police later told KBTX they had no evidence the shooting was gang related.

Residents living near the prison told KBTX shots were fired into nearby cars and at homes from the area of the facility. Bryan police said, however, the shooting “was not directed at and did not involve the incarceration of any individuals at the Federal Prison Camp.”
Midday Saturday, officials with the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed “BOP discharged a weapon in response to active fire.” They declined to explain further what took place.
Both the Bryan Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Prisons said separate investigations by their agencies were ongoing.

Earlier Saturday, an employee at the prison camp responsible for answering phones confirmed there were shots fired on the grounds, but declined to confirm anything further.
Law enforcement scanner traffic from around 2:30 a.m. said a detainee needed to be treated for a laceration, and an ambulance was seen in the area shortly after.

Federal Prison Camp Bryan made national headlines in early August when Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted sex trafficker and longtime partner of Jeffrey Epstein, was transferred to the facility following meetings with officials at the Department of Justice. NBC News reported this week that security was increased at the facility following Maxwell’s arrival.
FPC Bryan is a minimum-security facility that holds mostly nonviolent and white-collar inmates serving sentences of under 10 years. The facility sits on a 37-acre complex once home to a private school. In 2017 and 2020, inmates were reported missing after walking away from the facility.

The facility is also home to Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes and former “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” star Jennifer Shah.
