PHILADELPHIA – Browns coach Kevin Stefanski revealed Wednesday that quarterback Shedeur Sanders will start Saturday’s preseason game against the Eagles, if fellow rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel is unable to.
Gabriel has been dealing with a hamstring injury and only recently returned to 11-on-11 drills in practice. But Stefanski wasn’t ready to say Gabriel could go in Saturday’s preseason game.
Asked if Sanders would get the start if Kenny Pickett and Gabriel are unable to due their hamstring issues, Stefanski said, “Yeah, I guess if those guys could not play, yes, and we’re working through that.
“We were always going to play our young guys a lot in these games, so we’ll see how it shakes out here over the next couple of days.
Asked if Gabriel would start if he was healthy, Stefanski said, “Again, the plan was always to give one or both of those guys start in the preseason, so we’ll see how it shakes out.”
Stefanski said he had no significant update in Pickett’s health situation, but that he would be involved with 7-on-7 drills Wednesday. He also noted that Gabriel would continue to get more team reps.
As for Gabriel playing on Saturday, Stefanski said, “Think we have to get through today and tomorrow before I know that for sure.”
