Key Takeaways
- Shake Shack is adding five new items to its menu, including the introduction of a highly-requested side dish.
- The menu also features three new burgers and brand-new fries.
After working as a food editor for years, my friends often joke that I eat fast food for a living. And, while it may be said through a fit of giggles, they’re not exactly wrong. So, as someone who is certifiably a professional at consuming food from the drive-thru, I’d say I’m a trusted authority for my friends and family when it comes to new menu launches. And, for some reason, so many of the best menu launches come during the fall and winter months.
Maybe it’s because it’s comfort food season, but fast food chains tend to step up their game during the final few months of the year. From Chick-fil-A’s new pretzel bun pub-style chicken sandwiches to Taco Bell’s Decades Menu that features five returning items from Y2K, this fall has already seen multiple craveworthy launches. And, now, Shake Shack is debuting a fall menu that has quickly become the best fast food I’ve ever eaten.
On the heels of its Dog Days Menu, which featured five delicious hot dogs that I declared the best fast food of the year, Shake Shack is releasing a new French Onion Menu that might be the best fast food ever. The menu brings the iconic French onion soup flavor to the chain with three new burgers, plus new fries, a highly-requested side dish, and a returning fan-favorite dessert.
Shake Shack Launches New French Onion Menu
Shake Shack’s French Onion Menu introduces a new French Onion Soup Burger, French Onion ‘Shroom Burger, French Onion Shack Stack, Parmesan Garlic Fries, and Onion Rings—but only for a limited time.
The burgers are piled high with French onion soup-inspired ingredients, from savory caramelized onions to gooey Gruyère cheese. The French Onion Soup Burger starts with a quarter-pound patty topped with Gruyère cheese, caramelized onions, crispy sweet onions, and roasted garlic Parmesan on a potato bun. And the French Onion ‘Shroom Burger is the vegetarian version made with a crispy fried portobello mushroom that’s stuffed with melted Muenster and Cheddar and topped with caramelized onions and roasted garlic Parmesan aioli on the potato bun.
Allrecipes / Shake Shack
The French Onion Shack Stack combines the two by adding both a quarter-pound beef patty and ‘Shroom burger to the potato bun with Gruyère cheese, caramelized onions, and roasted garlic Parmesan aioli. Shake Shack’s new Parmesan Garlic Fries add a dusting of Parmesan cheese to the chain’s beloved crinkle cut fries, which are also served with a side of the same garlic Parmesan aioli found on the burgers.
Last, but certainly not least, are the long-awaited Onion Rings, which Shake Shack’s culinary team told Allrecipes they’ve been trying to get on the menu for years. The crispy, beer-battered onion rings are made with sweet Spanish onions and served with your choice of sauce, including honey mustard, ranch, barbecue, and Shack Sauce.
If all that comfort food puts you into a Thanksgiving-like daze, you can perk back up with the returning Coffee Shake. The shake is made with dark roast cold brew coffee, hand-spun with Shake Shack’s vanilla custard—and, unlike the rest of the French Onion menu, it’s not a limited-time offering. The Coffee Shake is back and here to stay. Though the culinary team did say that if the excitement is right, the Onion Rings may not go away, either (and trust me, the excitement will be there).
The French Onion menu launches exclusively on the Shake Shack app beginning Sept. 9, and then it will hit all Shack menus nationwide on Sept. 12.
I tried Shake Shack’s new French Onion Menu early, and here is my honest review.
My Honest Review of Shake Shack’s French Onion Menu
Shake Shack’s burger is one of the most beloved fast food burgers out there. And the chain’s new French Onion Soup Burger isn’t just the best burger I’ve ever had from Shake Shack. It’s the best fast food burger I’ve ever had. Full stop. French onion soup is my go-to comfort food in the fall and winter, so add all the delicious ingredients to a cheesy, hearty burger, and you’ve made my perfect dish.
The Gruyère on the burger makes for the perfect melty, gooey, extra-savory, and slightly nutty addition. The caramelized onions are deliciously tender and have a beefy, buttery flavor—and the crispy onions amplify the onion flavor while adding a crunchy texture.
I tried this burger nearly a week ago and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. So, I will be headed to Shake Shack immediately for it—along with a side of onion rings.
Shake Shack’s new Onion Rings may have taken years to perfect, but perfect them it did. The beer-battered side tastes straight out of a state fair, which, in my opinion, is the best kind of onion ring.
All washed down with the Coffee Shake, which I must say is utterly scrumptious, and you’ve got maybe the best fast food meal on the market right now.
