An underrated spy thriller starring Sebastian Stan and a star-studded ensemble cast is heading to a new streaming home.
Per FlixPatrol, 2022’s The 355 is officially soaring on the Netflix streaming charts. As of the time of writing, The 355 sits at the number five spot on the list of the top ten streaming films available in the United States on the platform. The film stands well above some major competition, including the recently released Happy Gilmore 2, although it still has a long way to go before it catches up with the likes of KPop Demon Hunters, which continues to dominate the chart from the number one spot on the list.
Directed by Simon Kinberg from a screenplay co-written alongside story creator Theresa Rebeck, The 355 follows a core cast of leading femme fatales, including Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, Fan Bingbing, Dian Kruger, and Lupita Nyong’o as agents from spy agencies ranging from the CIA to MI6 to the Colombian DNI, all of whom are brought together to put an end to a plot that would likely result in yet another World War. The action romp’s cast also includes appearances from the likes of Sebastian Stan, Sylvester Groth, Jason Flemyng, John Douglas Thompason, and Jason Wong, all of whom have a key role to play in the film’s overarching conspiratorial narrative.
The 355 arrived in theaters on Jan. 7, 2022 to decidedly dour reviews from critics. Although critics hailed the cast and their chemistry as conceptually sound, the film failed to make any real impact upon its release. This came as a major disappointment to those looking for an updated take on the legend of Agent 355, a potentially mythical female spy who purportedly carried out instrumental missions on behalf of the Patriots from both the home front and behind enemy lines during the American Revolution. Currently, The 355 holds an abysmal 24% “Fresh” rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, whereas the film’s audience-generated “Popcornmeter” score stands at a whopping 86% approval rating on the very same platform. Despite this resounding applause on the part of viewers, The 355 still only brought in $27.8 million at the box office against a budget of $75 million.
What’s Next for Sebastian Stan on the Silver Screen?
Fans can look forward to seeing Sebastian Stan return to the silver screen in 2026 for Avengers: Doomsday. Stan will be reprising his iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe role of Bucky Barnes, better known as the Winter Soldier. Back in April, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige gave fans an idea of what kind of dynamics they can expect to see when Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters, explaining that “Avengers movies are always about incredible actors who’ve never met before on screen, meeting for the first time and interacting in ways that they’ve never interacted before. That’s my favorite part of Avengers movies. There’s already been a little taste of that with some people sitting here (in the Thunderbolts* cast), and we officially start (filming Avengers: Doomsday) on Monday. So that’s what’s next for us, and it’s very exciting.”
