Seattle Mariners make 5 roster moves including Miller return

The Seattle Mariners made a big flurry of roster moves Tuesday, activating starting pitcher Bryce Miller from the injured list and swapping multiple relievers between the big club and Triple-A Tacoma.

Here’s a quick look at each move the M’s announced ahead of Game 2 of their road series against the Philadelphia Phillies:

• Starting pitcher Bryce Miller (right elbow inflammation) activated from 15-day injured list
• Relief pitcher Sauryn Lau selected from Triple-A Tacoma
• Relief pitcher Jackson Kowar optioned to Triple-A Tacoma
• Relief pitcher Casey Legumina optioned to Triple-A Tacoma
• Relief pitcher Trent Thorton (torn left Achilles) tranferred to the 60-day injured list

One good sign for the Mariners is that outfielder Dominic Canzone was not included in the roster moves. He was removed from Monday’s game after being hit by a pitch on his left wrist and is out of the lineup Tuesday. Mariners insider Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports reports that Canzone said Tuesday afternoon that his wrist felt “stiff” before he took pre-game swings.

The 26-year-old Miller will make his return to the mound for the Mariners by starting Tuesday’s game. He comes back to the M’s after making three rehab starts with Tacoma, allowing six earned runs over 13 1/3 innings for a 4.05 ERA. He had a 0.75 WHIP while striking out 15 and walking three for the Rainiers.

Miller, who had an earlier IL stint for the same elbow inflammation issue, is 2-5 with a 5.73 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 39 strikeouts to 23 walks over 48 2/3 innings this season for Seattle. He was a star for the Mariners in 2024, however, going 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 171 strikeouts to 45 walks over 180 1/3 innings.

Miller finished fourth in all of MLB last year in WHIP and tied for fourth in opponent batting average (.200). He also was eighth in ERA, 19th in strikeouts per walk ratio (3.80), and 21st in walks per nine innings (2.25).

Legumina gave up five runs on seven hits in two innings in Seattle’s 12-7 loss to Philadelphia on Monday, while Kowar gave up a run on two hits and two walks in the same game. It was Kowar’s second appearance in as many days.

The addition of Lau gives the Mariners a fresh arm in the bullpen after starter Logan Gilbert lasted just two innings in Monday’s loss, leaving relievers to cover six innings. That came after George Kirby lasted 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the New York Mets a day prior.

The Mariners had an extra pitcher in the bullpen in between placing rookie starter Logan Evans on the 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation last Friday and activating Miller.

Lau is 2-4 with a 3.00 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 21 games, including 18 starts, for Tacoma this year. He most recently pitched on Aug. 13, throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief with one hit, two walks and six strikeouts.

A 26-year-old right-hander, Lau was briefly on the Mariners MLB roster earlier this season, allowing one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings in his MLB debut on April 22.

Legumina, 28, has a 5.79 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 45 appearances for the M’s this year.

The 28-year-old Kowar has a 4.24 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 15 games for Seattle in 2025.

The Mariners continue their series against the Phillies at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, with radio coverage on Seattle Sports beginning at 2:30 with the pregame show.
