More packages of shrimp are being recalled for potential radioactive contamination — this time sold at Walmart locations across more than two dozen states, including Oregon and Washington.
AquaStar, a Seattle-based seafood wholesaler, announced Thursday it was recalling 26,460 packages of cocktail shrimp, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. It follows two recent frozen shrimp recalls, also issued due to possible contamination with a radioactive substance.
The shrimp products, packaged in 6-ounce clear plastic trays with red and white labels, were sold solely at Walmart locations across 26 states, including Oregon and Washington.
Packages include the universal product code “19434612191” and lot codes “10662 5106,” “10662 5107,” “10662 5124” or “10662 5125.” They were sold between July 31 and Aug. 16 and include a variety of “Best if Use By” dates.
Affected products were imported from Indonesia and may have become contaminated with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope that is formed as a byproduct of certain nuclear reactions. Health concerns caused by long-term, low-dose exposure can include an “an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells of the body,” according to the recall.
The company has not reported any illnesses.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled shrimp should not consume it and return the package to its place of purchase for a full refund. Those with questions can contact AquaStar at 800-331-3440.
