The Galaxy S26 might mean a meaningful upgrade for the majority of users, as reports seem to indicate that Samsung plans on using its own M14 display panels, bringing it up to par with the iPhone 17 Pro. Samsung is also using a tech that’s already used in its foldables.
One of the most advanced OLED panels to make an appearance is the M14 display. Apple used this panel on the iPhone 16 Pro series, and keeps the display foundation similar in the new iPhone 17 Pro lineup. Funny enough, Samsung develops the M14 panel, but it hasn’t used it on any of its own Galaxy phones.
A report from ETNews says Samsung is changing that, starting with the Galaxy S26 series. Specifically, Samsung wants the Galaxy S26 Ultra to benefit from the more efficient and slimmer display. The Galaxy S26 Pro and S26 Edge are said to use Samsung’s M13 panel, echoing the specs of the Galaxy S25.
M14 panels are slightly slimmer becuase they lack a polarizer in favor of a filtered cover layer that limits reflection, termed COE. The approach limits the need for extra layering and gives the panel better performance. In reality, it’s seemingly incremental, but it means Samsung may be able to reduce the size and power constraints that existed with M13 panels without COE.
The report indicates that Samsung is trying to get ahead of Apple and apply COE display tech to its most expensive Galaxy S26 flagship before the iPhone 19, which is when the company is rumored to start using COE in its displays. Samsung uses the method in its existing foldables, but bringing it to a slab-style phone would cement it into the mainstream.
Apple plans to apply COE to bar-type smartphones in 2027 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iPhone… Samsung is trying to apply the new technology to its top model to emphasize that it applied it before Apple.
This follows reports that the Galaxy S26 might not bring significant charging upgrades, though it should offer Qi2 capability.
