Samsung was among the first few brands to bring wireless charging to smartphones. However, after upgrading the wireless charging speed to 15W on Galaxy phones, it didn’t bring any improvements to the feature. Now, it appears that the company is considering bringing proper Qi2 wireless charging to its phones in the future.
Official Samsung survey asked people’s opinions on Qi2 wireless charging on phones
A recent survey from Samsung posted in the Samsung Members app had a few questions listed related to wireless charging. A question in the survey asked people if it would be convenient if a phone had built-in magnets (for Qi2 charging) if the device only supported wireless charging. Another question asked people if they would like Galaxy phones to have built-in magnets even if the feature made the phone thicker.
The company’s recent high-end phones have Qi2 Ready certification, which doesn’t require the devices to have built-in magnets. And people would need to use an additional Qi2 Ready case with built-in magnets for magnetic alignment.
One question in the survey asked people what would be the biggest inconvenience if a phone only supported wireless charging. Options for answers to that question include inconvenience in charging the phone during an outing, slow and frustrating charging speeds, inconvenience while using the phone while it is charging wirelessly, and the possibility of the phone getting hotter.
A recent report claimed that the Galaxy S26 series will feature Qi2 wireless charging. Another report said Google could add Qi2 wireless charging to its phones as soon as this year, starting with the Pixel 10 series. Alignment magnets requires for Qi2 certification mess with the S Pen mechanism, which is one of the reasons why Samsung didn’t add the feature to its phones yet.
Samsung’s System LSI division has already developed a chip with 50W wireless charging support
Looking at these questions, it appears that Samsung is gathering data on how many people actually want Qi2 wireless charging in Galaxy phones. A few months ago, Samsung’s System LSI division revealed that it has developed a new chip that supports up to 50W wireless charging and that it is working with Google and WPC to bring enhanced wireless charging speeds to mobile devices.
However, System LSI is different from Samsung MX (smartphone division), and the latter would decide whether or not future Galaxy phones will be compatible with the Qi2 (or newer version) standard for wireless charging with magnetic alignment.
Samsung also asked people participating in the survey how much they would like to spend on wireless charging for their phone. Another question asked about how many times they use the USB port on their phone for charging and data transfer. These questions make us think that the South Korean firm is even thinking about the possibility of a future where phones have no USB port at all.
