Recent Starfield updates may hint towards the game getting some major improvements either ahead of, or at the time of, its long rumoured PS5 release.
Upon trawling through the title’s code, dedicated fans have uncovered numerous mentions of something called ‘Cruise’ in relation to space travel. The suggestion is that Bethesda’s working on some kind of updated ship traversal between planets — the lack of which has been a main source of criticism up until now.
Rumours of major Starfield overhauls have been doing the rounds for a while now, but without much concrete evidence to go on, a lot of it comes across as wishful thinking. By most accounts, the sci-fi RPG isn’t a bad game — it’s just struggled to live up to those initial expectations.
Still, it’s hard not to feel as though Bethesda’s been cooking something up behind its veil of silence. The game’s first expansion, Shattered Space, launched in October of last year, and it was pretty much panned by press and players alike. There’s a growing sense that the developer needs to turn things around, especially if it plans to have an impact on PS5.
The latest reports have tipped a PS5 release for next year, with the title’s second expansion targeting spring 2026. Again, the hope is that Starfield will, in effect, benefit from an enhanced re-release. We certainly wouldn’t say that this is a Cyberpunk 2077 situation, but that’s the kind of positive turnaround that Bethesda could be aiming for.
