In an era of soaring hardware costs, Sony is working overtime to keep the price of the PS6 down.
The company knows that it needs to actually get the console into consumers’ homes if it’s to repeat the success of the PS5 and the PS4, and it’s not going to achieve that with a $700+ system.
There’s already been reports that the Japanese giant may be eyeing a range of hardware models, including a portable, all with different specifications aimed at different audiences.
Now the reliable Insider Gaming reports that the manufacturer has settled on a detachable disc drive, which is a feature it also introduced during the PS5 generation.
The idea is to keep costs down and provide consumers with flexibility: you’ll be able to purchase a digital-only device, a bundle with the detachable disc drive included – or, alternatively, add a disc drive at a later date if you’re undecided.
According to the site, Sony is also aiming to design a much simpler design than its predecessor. The goal is for the company to make the size and weight as low as it possibly can, reducing costs on storage and shipments.
All of this will help it profit on the product and keep the final prices down during these economically uncertain times.
In fact, on the back of recent reports about an upcoming PS5 Slim revision which will reduce the amount of SSD space included, Insider Gaming adds that this new model will reduce the weight of the console, saving the manufacturer a few pence on shipping per unit.
It’s clear that, when it comes to its upcoming hardware, Sony is thinking very carefully about costs.
That may disappoint those of you looking for a cutting edge piece of technology, but it may help the manufacturer make something much more affordable.
