The morning after trading two veterans, more details emerge about the Patriots’ trades of Kyle Dugger and Keion White.
With one deal, there’s a chance the Patriots retain a draft pick, while with another, it’s been revealed how much money the team will save.
According to the NFL Network, the Patriots are paying most of the money left on Dugger’s deal for this season. The veteran was owed a base salary of $9.75 million along with per-game roster bonuses.
To get the deal done with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Patriots agreed to pick up most of what’s left, which is around $5.4 million. That means the team will lose cap space this season while paying Dugger. However, they’ll also clear cap space over the next two seasons.
According to the NFL Network, the final two years of Dugger’s contract extension have been voided, and he’ll become an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of this season.
That’s big news for the Patriots.
Dugger was set to have cap hits of around $16.9 million in 2026 and $18 million in 2027. Now, the Patriots create $16.9 million in cap space for next offseason while also unloading $18 million of cap space for the 2027 offseason.
The Patriots attempted to trade Dugger this summer. However, two NFL sources told MassLive that Dugger’s contract wasn’t appealing to most teams.
The Steelers, who signed former Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers this year, needed additional help after strong safety DeShon Elliott suffered a knee injury Sunday night. That led to Pittsburgh engaging in trade talks with the Patriots, and the Patriots offered to pay most of Dugger’s salary this season while offloading future money.
In the Patriots’ deal with the San Francisco 49ers involving White, the team could retain its 2026 seventh-round pick. According to the NFL Network, the pick, which they sent to the 49ers with White for a sixth-rounder, is conditional.
If White is active for seven games, the Patriots keep that pick. If White doesn’t play in at least seven games for San Francisco, the 49ers keep that seventh-round selection. San Francisco has nine games left in the season.
