Repair YouTuber attempts to upgrade iPhone 17 Pro Max to 2TB of storage on launch day

Despite the new iPhone 17 lineup only being available for just over a day, repair experts in China have already started to open up the new iPhone 17 Pro Max to see what’s possible. Yesterday, a YouTube channel known as DirectorFeng uploaded a video showcasing their journey in attempting to upgrade an iPhone 17 Pro Max to 2TB of storage, just hours after the phone was available.

The video starts off as an attempt to upgrade to 2TB of storage, all the way from a base 256GB model. However, during the process, he discovers that the 2TB NAND he had purchased wouldn’t quite be compatible with the iPhone 17 Pro Max – so it ends up just being a 1TB upgrade. The channel says to “stay tuned” for a future 2TB upgrade.

Nonetheless, the video showcases a full disassembly of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, highlighting many of its new design elements. Things like the vapor chamber cooling system, the new incredibly small logic board, and more are fully on display. You also get to watch the process of destroying the previous 256GB NAND to free up the pad to solder the next NAND.

It’s a fun watch, and depicts the entire teardown and upgrade process. Video linked below:

All in all, most people won’t be upgrading the internal storage of their iPhones, but it’s still neat to see the process and know what’s possible.
