BOSTON — In an unsurprising development, the Red Sox and Yankees won’t be playing any matinees during their best-of-three Wild Card Series in New York this week.
Major League Baseball announced that Boston and New York will play Game 1 at 6:08 p.m. ET on Tuesday and Game 2 at the same time the following day. Game 3, if necessary, set for Thursday, is also tentatively scheduled for that time, though that might change based on results around the league and which other games are being played that day.
The Red Sox have announced Cy Young candidate Garrett Crochet as their Game 1 starter and the Yankees will counter with fellow All-Star Max Fried. Game 2 will pit righty Brayan Bello against left-hander Carlos Rodón. The Red Sox would have veteran Lucas Giolito available for Game 3; the Yankees would choose from a group of young righties that includes Luis Gil, Cam Schlittler and Will Warren.
The Red Sox’ first postseason appearance since 2021 will pit them against the same team against whom they have opened their last two playoff runs. Boston beat the Yankees in the 2018 ALDS and in the 2021 Wild Card Game.
“It’s gonna be exciting,” said shortstop Trevor Story. “Obviously, a bunch of history there. Like we’ve said the whole time, we really don’t care who we play, as long as we get in. We feel like we’re a confident group and we can take care of business. We’re looking forward to it.”
ESPN will exclusively carry the first two games of the series and has its top, “Sunday Night Baseball” team of commentators on the call. Karl Ravech, Eduardo Pérez and David Cone will be in the booth with Buster Olney reporting. On ESPN Radio, Roxy Bernstein and Gregg Olson will call the series.
MLB will keep the same order of its series each day. Tigers-Guardians in Cleveland is set for 1:08 p.m. ET starts each day, the Padres-Cubs games will begin at 3:08 p.m. ET and the Reds-Dodgers series is set with 9:08 p.m. ET starts.
The Red Sox traveled to New York late Sunday night after closing the regular season with a 4-3 win over Detroit. They will hold a workout at Yankee Stadium on Monday afternoon with manager Alex Cora and Crochet set to address the media starting at 2:40 p.m. ET. The action will begin Tuesday.
“As a fan of the game, growing up, you know pretty well about the rivalry and what it means to both cities,” said Story. “It’s a special thing. I think it’s the best in all of sports. It’s gonna be special to see them in the postseason.”
The winner of the Boston-New York series will travel to Toronto for the American League Divisional Series, which begins Saturday at Rogers Centre.
