BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox’ 5-2 win over the Pirates at Fenway Park on Sunday:
1) The Red Sox avoided the sweep, taking the final game of the three-game series with the Pirates to improve to 76-62. It ended a five-game home losing streak.
2) Speedster Jarren Duran hit his first career inside-the-park home run to put the Red Sox ahead 4-1 in the fifth inning. It came with two outs and knocked in Carlos Narváez (ground-rule double) and Alex Bregman (hit by pitch). He hit it into the triangle in center field and scored standing up after center fielder Oneil Cruz had some difficulty picking it up.
3) Duran’s time of 14.71 seconds from home to home is the fastest by a Red Sox player during the Statcast era. An excited Duran pumped his fists and screamed after crossing home plate.
He said he was “running out of gas.”
“I was just happy I didn’t have to slide after all,” Duran joked. “Narvi (Narváez) giving me the slide (sign). I was like, ‘This is going to be more of a fall than a slide.’ And then I saw the catcher vacate and I said, ‘Thank you. I’m going standing up.’ I feel like we’ve been hitting the ball so hard at people and just lining out and just not getting lucky, so I just kind of let out a bunch of energy just seeing we caught a break a little bit right there.”
4) It marked the second inside-the-park homer by a Red Sox player this year. Wilyer Abreu recorded the other June 30 at home vs. the Reds. It’s the first time Boston has hit two inside-the-park home runs in one season since Nomar Garciaparra and Darren Lewis did it in 1998.
5) Before Duran’s inside-the-parker, star rookie Roman Anthony needed to make contact with two runners in scoring position and he did. His grounded out to shortstop, scoring Romy Gonzalez who reached on an error to begin the fifth inning.
6) Lucas Giolito earned the win, allowing one run in 6 innings. He allowed more walks (five) than hits (three) but limited the damage while striking out six.
7) Giolito has allowed just one run in his past 14 innings, lowering his ERA to 3.38 in 22 starts.
8) Giolito’s streak of 11 straight scoreless innings ended when he lost his control in the fourth inning, walking three straight batters with two outs. He then threw a wild pitch that allowed Nick Gonzales to score from third base, putting the Pirates ahead 1-0.
9) The Red Sox welcome the Guardians to Fenway Park for a three-game series beginning Monday at 1:35 p.m. Red Sox righty Brayan Bello (10-6, 2.99 ERA) will pitch opposite lefty Parker Messick (1-0, 0.66 ERA).
