BOSTON — The Red Sox completed a minor trade over the weekend that depleted some of their catching depth at Triple-A.
Boston dealt Blake Sabol to the White Sox for cash considerations, according to a release from the WooSox. Sabol will be assigned to Chicago’s top affiliate in Charlotte.
Sabol was third on the depth chart behind big league options Carlos Narváez and Connor Wong and was called up to play eight games early in the year when Wong broke his finger. With Sabol out of the picture, the Red Sox are likely to add a depth catcher from outside the organization very soon, according to industry sources. Currently in Worcester, the club has veteran Seby Zavala and 21-year-old Enderso Lira.
Sabol, 27, was acquired in a minor January trade with San Francisco. He was 2-for-16 with a double and an RBI during his time with the Red Sox in April. With Worcester, he hit .167 with three homers, 17 RBIs and a .580 OPS in 43 games. Sabol was on the 40-man roster until June 1, when he was designated for assignment. He returned to Worcester after clearing waivers.
Sabol has appeared in 129 MLB games over three seasons with the Giants and Red Sox and is a career .237 hitter with 13 homers (all in 2023, when he played 110 games) and 46 RBIs.
