BOSTON — The Red Sox made four roster moves Monday, including announcing the signing of first baseman Nathaniel Lowe.
Lowe, a 30-year-old former Gold Glover and Silver Slugger, will be active for Monday’s game against the Orioles at Fenway Park and will wear No. 37.
Boston also recalled outfielder/infielder Nate Eaton from Triple-A Worcester, placed outfielder Rob Refsnyder (left oblique strain) on the 10-day IL and designated catcher Ali Sánchez for assignment. Sánchez spent six games on the active roster as a third catcher, recording just one plate appearance.
Refsnyder’s IL stint is retroactive to Friday (Aug. 15), making him eligible to return as early as next Monday when the Red Sox play the Orioles in Baltimore.
Boston agreed to a deal with Lowe late Sunday evening. The Nationals designated Lowe for assignment on Thursday (Aug. 14) and released him Saturday. The Red Sox were able to sign Lowe to the prorated league minimum because he cleared waivers and got released. Washington will be responsible for the remainder of his prorated $10.3 million salary.
Lowe, a 30-year-old left-handed hitter, has struggled this season, batting .216 with a .292 on-base percentage, .373 slugging percentage and .665 OPS in 119 games (449 plate appearances) with Washington. But he does have 35 extra-base hits (16 homers, 17 doubles, two triples).
Lowe won an AL Gold Glove at first base in 2022 and AL Silver Slugger in 2023 with Texas.
The 28-year-old Eaton has appeared in 14 games for Boston this year, including batting leadoff four times. He has gone 6-for-24 (.250) with two doubles, one RBI, five runs, one walk and 10 strikeouts.
Eaton hit .290 with a .373 on-base percentage, .483 slugging percentage, .856 OPS, 12 home runs, 25 doubles, three triples, 55 RBIs and 15 steals in 94 games (400 plate appearances) for Worcester this season.
