Baseball America listed Red Sox first round pick Kyson Witherspoon as one of 12 prospects from the 2025 MLB Draft who could reach the majors in 2026.
The 15th overall pick out of Oklahoma, is up to 99 mph with his fastball and has a five-pitch mix.
Baseball America wrote, “College starters who saw sizable workloads like Witherspoon are typically shelved after signing to rest their arms, but more often than not, they end up moving quickly right out of the gates when they do make their minor league debuts. Depending on where he lands, Witherspoon is likely to be a pitcher who should breeze through the lower levels and land in the upper minors in the first half of 2026.”
Red Sox 2024 second-rounder Payton Tolle reported to Fort Myers after being signed last year and stayed there for the rest of the season. He did not make his pro debut until this season. He’s already made it to Double-A Portland and a late 2025 MLB debut isn’t off the table.
The 20-year-old Witherspoon could move quickly like Tolle did even if he doesn’t pitch in the minors this season.
The 6-foot-2, 207-pounder posted a 10-4 record with a 2.65 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 124 strikeouts and 23 walks in 16 starts (95 innings) at Oklahoma this college baseball season.
“With Kyson, it’s big velocity,” director of amateur scouting Devin Pearson said. “And he’s held it over a lot of innings with some really good breaking pitches. Whether it’s his cutter, slider, a lot of upside there to continue to maximize his mix. But a strike thrower with high velo and interesting secondary shapes.”
