Kelly Clarkson‘s ex-husband, talent manager Brandon Blackstock, died at 48—and his stepmother, Reba McEntire, broke her silence in the wake of his death.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away,” Blackstock’s family said in a statement shared with Parade on Thursday, Aug. 7. “Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

McEntire, 70, was previously married to Brandon’s father, Narvel Blackstock, 68, from 1989 to 2015.

OnAug. 12, the “I’m a Survivor” singer took to Instagram with a touching tribute.

“Last week, my stepson/oldest son Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God. His struggle is over and he is in eternal peace in God’s presence,” McEntire captioned a carousel of photos of them together through the years. “There is no one else like him, and I’m thankful for the time we had together. His legacy and laughter will be carried on through his family. Rest in peace cowboy. Happy trails to you til we meet again.”

One day earlier, McEntire popped into the comments of her son Shelby Blackstock‘s Instagram post to comment on Brandon’s death.

Shelby wrote in part on Aug. 8, “Words cannot begin to capture the tremendous loss our family has endured. Yesterday, we lost a brother, a father, a grandfather, and a son.
Brandon Blackstock was an irreplaceable part of our family—funny, bright, and full of life—and he will be deeply missed.”

In response, McEntire commented, “Very well said Shelby. Yes we will miss him so much.💔💔🙏💔❤️❤️❤️🙏💔.”

On Wednesday, Aug. 6, Clarkson revealed that Blackstock had been battling an illness. She announced the postponement of her Las Vegas residency to prioritize time with their kids, River, 11, and Remington, 9.

“While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,” she wrote in a statement. She also apologized to fans and expressed her gratitude for their “grace, kindness and understanding.”
