The real reason why John Cena’s retirement match won’t be taking place in Boston, Massachusetts has now been revealed.
With Cena approaching the end of his year-long WWE retirement tour, the location of the event which will feature John Cena’s final match was recently revealed.
While it had been heavily speculated that the December 13 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event would take place in Boston, Massachusetts, less than 50 miles away from Cena’s hometown of West Newbury, the event will instead emanate from the Capital One Arena in Washington DC, per a recent report.
Per Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Daily Updates, Boston’s bid for the event wasn’t high enough, which is why the SNME show will take place in Washington DC.
Meltzer wrote:
The reason the John Cena retirement show won’t be in Boston is because WWE wanted money similar to what they got from New Jersey for SummerSlam, to host the event, which would have been for multiple shows the weekend of 12/12 to 12/15.
Boston didn’t bid high enough and then they moved to Washington, DC.
John Cena last wrestled on the September 5 SmackDown episode, challenging for Sami Zayn’s US Championship in a match which ended in a no contest following interference from Brock Lesnar.
Cena is now slated to face Lesnar in singles action at the September 20 Wrestlepalooza event.
