Raccoon killed by family dog in N.J. tests positive for rabies, officials say

A raccoon killed by a family dog in the backyard of a Barrington home has tested positive for rabies, officials announced Monday.

The incident happened on Aug. 18 and the borough’s animal control officer picked up the raccoon and had it tested at the state Public Health & Environmental Laboratories in Trenton, according to a statement from Camden County.

The lab then notified the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services that the animal was rabid, authorities said.

Investigators reported that a second family dog was possibly exposed to rabies, and three people may have been exposed as well.

The Camden County Department of Health and Human Services received proof of vaccination for both dogs, and the exposed dog received a rabies booster shot and will be under confinement and observation for 45 days, officials said.

All three family members who were potentially exposed were advised to speak with their doctor about seeking post-exposure prophylaxis treatment for rabies, authorities said.

“Although rabies is a serious illness, it can be prevented by early treatment,” said Commissioner Virginia Betteridge, liaison to the Camden County Health Department. “If you have been bitten or scratched by a wild animal it is important that you seek immediate medical attention.”
