The Pittsburgh Steelers continued to tinker with their 53-man roster Wednesday when they placed quarterback Will Howard and defensive back Donte Kent on injured reserve and signed offensive lineman Max Scharping and safety Chuck Clark, according to a source.
Howard and Kent must miss a minimum of four games while serving on injured reserve. By waiting until Wednesday, the Steelers did not have to designate either player to return like they did a day earlier with cornerback Cory Trice Jr.
Howard broke a finger on his throwing hand and recently has started a light throwing program. Like Howard, Kent missed the entire preseason with a lower body injury.
Scharping and Clark were vested veterans who had their contracts terminated Tuesday when the Steelers reached the initial 53-man roster.
Last season, the Steelers claimed Scharping, 29, off Washington’s practice squad in October, and he appeared in two games with the team. Clark, 30, signed with the Steelers early in training camp after spending last year with the New York Jets. He played for the Baltimore Ravens for six seasons before sitting out 2023 with a torn ACL.
