PS6 Will Feature PS5’s Most Divisive Design Changes – Report

A new report claims that the PS5’s most divisive design changes will be featured on the PS6 at launch: a separate disc drive.

PS6 will have a simpler design, according to reports

This new report comes from Insider Gaming, where sources claim that the detachable disc drive will remain a feature for Sony’s next-generation console, the PS6. Similar to the PS5, players will be able to purchase a digital-only PS6 console, a PS6 with a disc drive bundled that needs to be registered upon setup, or purchase a detachable disc drive at a later date to upgrade the digital-only console.

According to one of the publication’s sources, they claim that PlayStation is “firm” on keeping detachable disc drives for a couple of reasons. The first is that the PS5’s disc drives hit the company’s internal sales targets. The second is that this should reduce shipping and manufacturing costs during these “uncertain times.” The latter reason may also influence the actual design of the console, as it has been suggested in the report that the PS6 design will be simpler to help reduce the aforementioned costs.

Like the PS5, there are some pros and cons to the PS6 featuring a detachable disc drive. Starting with the pros, this allows players to have a choice in how they purchase their console at launch, as digital-only consoles can save players up to $100. It also suggests that PlayStation isn’t planning on axing physical video games just yet.

However, a big con for a detachable disc drive is its availability. When the PS5 Pro launched last year, it did not include a disc drive, which meant players had to purchase one separately. However, they sold out quickly, with scalpers reselling the accessory for up to twice the price.

Making the PS6’s design simpler will hopefully reduce the likelihood of a mid-gen price hike, like the PS5. Due to the current economic climate, the PS5 has increased its price in multiple regions, with the U.S. most recently receiving the PS5 price hike.
