Prince William is on a five-day visit to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this week in support of the fifth iteration of his Earthshot Prize Awards, and on November 5 took a moment to pay tribute to his mother, Princess Diana, and a trip she made to the South American country in 1991.

Diana was joined by her then-husband, Prince Charles, for the visit 34 years ago, where at one point she ventured to the famous Christ the Redeemer statue. William visited the exact same spot his mother stood on November 5, on the third day of his visit; the Prince of Wales took in what The Telegraph called “a quiet moment of reflection” before the awards ceremony was to take place later in the evening on Wednesday.

Like his mother before him, William took in the stunning views at the summit of the Corcovado Mountain in Rio to take in the statue, which stands 98 feet tall and depicts Jesus Christ, arms outstretched.

The summit was closed off to the public for William’s 45-minute visit. Just as he recreated his mother’s visit to Rio, tomorrow William will emulate his father as he travels to Belem on November 6 to speak at the COP 30 climate change summit, similar to when Charles attended a climate seminar in Belem in 1991.
“The prince has loved meeting so many people from across Rio over the last few days,” a Kensington Palace spokesman said to the traveling media pack. “He’s been incredibly struck by the number of people who fondly remember his mother’s visit to this beautiful city.”

This visit marks William’s first to Brazil, and during his tour he has so far played beach volleyball at Copacabana Beach, kicked around a soccer ball at Maracanã Stadium, and held plenty of babies. William’s wife Kate Middleton stayed home with the couple’s kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis back in the U.K., where they’ve just moved into their “forever home,” Forest Lodge. The kids aren’t far from William’s mind, though, as he reiterated that his Earthshot Prize was inspired by his children.

“As a father, I think constantly about the world my children will inherit,” he told Hello! ahead of the trip. “I want them to grow up surrounded by nature, opportunity, and a sense of hope about the future.”

The future king won’t head home to the U.K. empty handed—he was given a trio of soccer jerseys for George, Charlotte, and Louis earlier in the week, with a minor goof: Louis’s name was slightly misspelled on his Fluminese FC jersey, reading “Loui” instead of the correct spelling.
