Images shared on social media ranged from brunches and farmers markets to families strolling downtown, to counter the president’s portrayal.

It highlighted people “visiting Saturday Market, feeding geese, sipping espresso, biking, playing in the park, and going to food carts” as a snapshot of the city’s weekend atmosphere.
Trump’s claim comes from smaller demonstrations that continue outside Portland’s ICE facility. Protesters have regularly gathered to oppose immigration enforcement policies, sometimes leading to clashes with federal agents.
Meanwhile, under the GOP’s hardline agenda, Trump has authorized the deployment of federal troops to multiple U.S. cities in recent months, citing concerns over crime and the protection of federal facilities.
Earlier deployments included Washington, D.C., where National Guard troops were sent in August 2025 following concerns over crime. Local leaders in the capital expressed opposition, noting that violent crime had been declining and questioning the necessity of federal intervention.
In June 2025, National Guard forces were also deployed to Los Angeles amid protests over immigration raids. Similar operations occurred in Memphis, Tennessee, where troops were sent in response to public safety concerns and demonstrations related to immigration enforcement.
Trump has indicated that additional deployments could occur in other cities.

Congresswoman Maxine Dexter wrote in a post on X: “Scenes from ‘war ravaged’ Portland today. My message to Trump’s troops: You are not needed. You are not wanted. Go home.”

The Pentagon said in a statement: “We stand ready to mobilize U.S. military personnel in support of DHS [Department of Homeland Security] operations in Portland at the president’s direction. The department will provide information and updates as they become available.”
