State Police in New Hampshire released additional information Monday about the weekend crash involving former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Shortly before the crash on Saturday, Guiliani and his driver were heading south on Interstate 93 in Manchester when they were flagged down by a woman, who said she had been involved in a domestic violence incident, State Police said in a statement.
Giuliani’s driver, Theodore Goodman, reported the incident just after 9 p.m., and the two men stayed with the woman until police arrived to investigate. They relayed what they had witnessed and then took a nearby exit off the highway, police said.
When Giuliani and Goodman got back onto the highway traveling north, they were struck from behind — almost directly across the highway from the scene of the initial incident.
Police who were dispatched to the domestic call were able to respond to the crash immediately and provide aid.
The former mayor was brought to a nearby trauma center where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg, according to a post on X by Giuliani’s head of security, Michael Ragusa.
Giuliani was released from the hospital on Monday afternoon, the New York Times reported, citing a friend of Giuliani.
Investigators believe the driver who struck Giuliani’s car — identified as Lauren Kemp, 19, of Concord — had no connection to the initial domestic violence incident, according to State Police.
“At this time, all aspects of the crash remain under investigation, including whether distraction or curiosity of the initial scene was a factor,” State Police said. “No charges have been filed.”
The investigation will include the review of dashboard and body cameras, police said.
