Pokémon Go’s leveling system is changing — here’s how

Leveling in Pokémon Go is changing this week, letting players achieve a new max level and earn more useful rewards as they level up. The developer calls the change, arriving Oct. 15, a rebalancing of Pokémon Go leveling system, changes which may alleviate frustrations related to achieving max levels.

On Monday, Pokémon Go developer Niantic detailed how the mobile gotta-catch-’em-all game’s new leveling system will work, and what many longtime players can look forward to. Niantic also revealed a new way to earn XP: Daily Adventure Eggs.

Pokémon Go’s level cap is going from 50 to 80 as part of Niantic’s new system. That increase only applies to trainers, not their Pokémon, which will still max out at level 50. But the progression to 80 now comes with more rewards, including increased Pokémon and item storage, and a long list of cosmetics unlocked at certain milestones.

New Pokémon Go Leveling Requirements

Here are the new XP numbers required for key milestone levels in Pokémon Go:

  • Level 10: 48,000 total XP
  • Level 20: 258,000 total XP
  • Level 30: 1,083,000 total XP
  • Level 40: 3,953,000 total XP
  • Level 50: 12,753,000 total XP
  • Level 60: 34,353,000 total XP
  • Level 70: 85,853,000 total XP
  • Level 80: 203,353,000 total XP

Currently, Pokémon Go players need 176 million XP to reach level 50. The current version of leveling in Pokémon Go also required a list of tasks to be completed to advance to levels 41 through 50, and those will be moved to levels 71 to 80.

Niantic says that players who are already level 23 or above will automatically gain at least one level, and that no players will drop in level when the new leveling system takes effect.

  • Level 25: Poké Ball Cap
  • Level 30: Poké Ball Shoes

Additionally, players who reach level 70 in Pokémon Go will have an increased chance of making Lucky Friends when exchanging gifts.

What is the Daily Adventure Egg?

Similar to the Daily Adventure Incense, Pokémon Go players will now get a Daily Adventure Egg, which will hatch a Pokémon and earn players 10,000 XP for incubating it. Each Daily Adventure Egg requires just 1 km of exploration to hatch, and it won’t consume players’ other incubators. (When a trainer logs in to Pokémon Go for the first time each day, the Daily Adventure Egg will automatically be placed into its own incubator.)

Pokémon Go’s new leveling system will go live on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
