Pixel Watch 4 may finally allow for repairs, report claims

After launching three generations of smartwatches that can’t be repaired, Google is reportedly making changes to the Pixel Watch 4 that allow for repairs, but details are incredibly vague at this point.

Google’s Pixel Watch has a unique and striking design, but the design has also left customers wearing a watch that, once broken, cannot be repaired. The sole remedy for a broken Pixel Watch has been to replace the entire thing.

The policy stayed in place on Pixel Watch 3, but Google said last year during a climate-focused conference that it was “thinking” about how to match a repairable Pixel Watch in the future.

It seems the company is following up on that with the Pixel Watch 4. Android Headlines claims that Google has made changes to Pixel Watch 4 that allow for repairs to the smartwatch, saying that it can “be taken apart and serviced when needed.”

But that’s the extent of what we know right now.

The report doesn’t mention what repairs are possible, what changes Google has made to make this possible, or any other details. It’s just a simple claim that it can “be taken apart” and repaired. Presumably this would include the two key repairs you’d need from a smartwatch, including the replacement of a broken display (or the glass on top), as well as a battery replacement. We’ll have to wait on Google’s full reveal to learn more, but this is news we’re certainly glad to hear, even if we do wish there were a few more details.

Google this week confirmed an August 20 event to launch its new Pixel lineup, including its latest smartwatch.
