With two days until the trade deadline, the Pittsburgh Pirates have only made one trade of note this month.
Pittsburgh sent infielder Adam Frazier to the Kansas City Royals for minor leaguer Cam Devanney on July 16.
The Pirates are expected to make a handful of more trades before Thursday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline, and they are reportedly discussing a deal involving one of their relief pitchers with the Toronto Blue Jays, per MLB Network’s Jon Morosi.
In the Pirates’ bullpen, there are three logical trade candidates — David Bednar, Dennis Santana and Caleb Ferguson.
Bednar is a perfect 17 for 17 in save opportunities this season and has a 2.37 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 38 innings across 42 relief appearances. Since he was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis after early struggles, Bednar has a 1.70 ERA.
Santana, meanwhile, has a 1.39 ERA which ranks fourth among MLB relief pitchers with at least 40 innings pitched this season. The right-hander has held opponents to a miniscule .176/.221/.239 batting line and has notched a career-high five saves.
Ferguson has made 45 appearances in his first season with the Pirates and is 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA and a 3.14 FIP.
Bednar and Santana are both arbitration-eligible one more time this winter before hitting free agency following the 2026 season. Ferguson will be back on the open market at the end of this year.
The Blue Jays have a handful of position-player prospects in the upper levels of their minor league system. Some names that could pique general manager Ben Cherington’s interest are outfielders Yohendrick Pinango and RJ Shreck as well as shortstop Josh Kasevich among others.
