Dangerous storms moved through Massachusetts Saturday.
Storms started in New York with a tornado warning around 1:30 p.m. but slowly moved their way across Massachusetts, leaving a path of destruction.
Trees and wires were blown over as the National Weather Service warned of 60 mph winds. There was also the possibility of golf ball sized hail.
“For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building,” the National Weather Service warned. “Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.”
The “dangerous situation” also included fears of lightning.
“Lightning is one of nature`s leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning,” the weather service wrote.
At 4:07 p.m., a tornado touched down in Central Massachusetts Saturday, a National Weather Service’s radar confirmed. The radar showed a tornado in Holden moving east at 40 mph.
Jonathan and Lexi Peden, parents of two young children, were in their home on Willow Brook Road in Holden when their tree in the front yard fell over.
One minute, it was pouring rain and then all of a sudden, it turned “pitch black” outside, according to Lexi Peden.
“The winds came through and the trees like, folded into itself,” Jonathan Peden said.
The storm moved into Boston with a severe thunderstorm warning lasting until 6:15 p.m.
