Photographer Austin Mann reviews the iPhone 17 Pro cameras

Travel photographer Austin Mann always publishes a fun review of the latest iPhone camera advancements, and this year is no exception: here’s Mann’s latest review of the iPhone 17 Pro cameras, including write-ups on every tentpole new feature.

Mann’s favorite iPhone 17 Pro upgrade is the new Telephoto lens with 4x and 8x zoom

If you want in-depth reviews on iPhone 17’s camera upgrades from a professional, there’s another great option. Yesterday photographer Tyler Stalman published his review, and now Austin Mann has done the same.

Mann took the iPhone 17 Pro more through more than 150 miles of cycling in the mountains of northeastern Italy, climbing 19,715 feet by bicycle. His full review is packed with beautiful photos and his impressions of all the key tentpole additions this year.

His favorite new feature? The upgraded 48MP Telephoto lens.

I can confidently say the biggest improvement for photographers this year is the new 48MP 4x lens and the 8x telephoto. These focal lengths feel right and open up opportunities to capture fresh perspectives.

On the 16 Pro, the 5x (120mm) often felt a little too tight. The new 4x (100mm) feels far more natural and much more familiar. It’s a classic portrait and landscape focal length in the photography world, and with the bump up from 12MP to 48MP I’ve been really happy with the results.

Mann also had great things to say about the new Center Stage front camera:

It was especially nice using this while on the bike. Operating the iPhone single handed, in the sunlight, wearing sunglasses, and summiting the Passo Giau, is not an easy way to see or fiddle with settings. But that didn’t matter, this feature simply did the fiddling for me and adapted to capture both Doug and me in a photo of this memorable moment together.

These “surprise and delight” features are my favorite… they make the experience better without asking anything of you. No need to turn it on, activate it, or adjust anything. Just hold the iPhone in front of you and click.

The review focuses on iPhone 17 Pro specifically, but Mann does mention the iPhone Air briefly too.

He admits it’s a “beautiful device” and “has a strong 1x sensor,” but without the Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras he instantly felt too restricted.

The rest of the review includes Mann’s thoughts on:

  • the new Bright photographic style
  • iOS 26’s Camera app changes
  • the Crossbody Strap
  • and more
