Perseid Meteor Shower Will Light Up SoCal Skies This Month

Grab your binoculars and get your telescope ready as the Perseids are back! This dazzling meteor shower, known for its intensity and high visibility, is set to take over the night skies and fill your summer nights with magic.

The Perseid meteor shower occurs every year when Earth passes through the trail of debris left by a comet that orbits the Sun approximately every 133 years. As particles from the comet strike our atmosphere at high speeds, they burn up and produce the bright “shooting stars” we see streaking across the sky.

As every summer, The Perseids phenomenon is active between July and August, but this 2025 the of highest activity and visibility, is expected to happen around August 12–13, the prestigious publication Space reports. Under ideal dark‑sky conditions (with little to no moonlight nor clouds!) the meteor shower could reach the astonishing amount of around 100 shootings stars per hour.

Still, there’s something important to keep in mind: the Moon will be in its gibbous phase (almost full) during the peak of the shower on the night of August 12–13, following the full Moon on August 9. This bright Moon could reduce visibility, especially for the dimmer meteors.

So a good idea is to plan accordingly and adjust your stargazing session for late July or early August, right before the Moon starts brightening the sky too much. For the clearest views, head outside between midnight and dawn, give your eyes time to adjust to the dark, and try to find a spot away from city light pollution.

Some great spots to catch the Perseids meteor shower includes Death Valley, Joshua Tree and Big Bear Lake. But if you don’t have the time or budget for a quick scape, there will be several free stargazing parties around L.A. and even special family events at L.A. county’s park for overnight camping and catching shooting stars as well!
