Last week, Halle Berry’s first ex-husband, David Justice, went on the All the Smoke podcast and opened up about why he “decided to leave her” in 1996 after three years of marriage.

After admitting that he didn’t “know if [his] heart was really into” the relationship from the start, David said one of his primary concerns about his movie-star wife was that she didn’t seem “motherly.”
“My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast,” he recalled. “I’m a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, you know?”
“I’m thinking, ‘OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?’” the former MLB player questioned. “At that time, as a young guy — she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like, motherly, and then we start having issues.”
In February 1996, David told Halle he was leaving her, and the pair wound up having a pretty messy divorce, which was finalized in 1997 and involved Halle filing a restraining order against him. Halle went on to marry two more times and welcomed two children in 2008 and 2013. Meanwhile, David has been married to Rebecca Villalobos since 2001.
Though David’s comments were part of a broader conversation, the clip of him questioning Halle’s motherliness did the rounds on social media and sparked a whole lot of viral backlash and confusion last week.
One X post with over 216,000 likes read: “Halle Berry, a household name, was supposed to take time away from her breadwinning career to ‘cook and clean’ for a man I’ve never heard of?! LMAOOOO! According to their net worths, he needed to be the one throwing the apron on and cleaning the house too.”
Another with over 17,000 likes read: “Lol, he really thought she was gonna stop her acting career and become a housewife.”
“So many Straight men don’t want political, emotional and spiritual life partners,” read another post with 11,000 likes, “they just want domestic servants. Hire a house keeper.”
Now, off the back of all the discourse, Halle has weighed in on the conversation herself — in the best way she possibly could.

On Thursday, which also happened to be her 59th birthday, the Oscar-winner posted a photo on X of herself and her partner, Van Hunt, lounging on a sunbed with a big bowl of chips between them. “Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering,” Halle captioned the post, which, at the time of writing, has been liked over 61,000 times.
It’s giving unbothered, flourishing, and certainly not worried about what an ex has to say. And people are loving the shade, with fans calling it a “10/10 clap back.”

“AND LOOKIN GOOD WHILE DOIN IT 😍,” commented someone else.
“happy birthday to the one and only Halle ‘Domestic Diva Deluxe’ Berry,” joked another.
