An already thin Jets quarterback room took a potentially major hit on Tuesday.
According to the team, backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor received arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday morning, and will not play during the rest of New York’s preseason.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Jets “hope Taylor will be ready for Week 1 vs. the Steelers.”
Taylor did not play at all in the first preseason game for New York against Green Bay. Instead, projected starter Justin Fields began things for the team.
Fields only threw four passes before being replaced by Adrian Martinez and Brady cook.
While Fields is entering his fifth year in the league, it’s his first with the Jets, and Taylor provided a valued veteran presence in the quarterback room.
Neither Martinez nor Cook has played a snap in the NFL yet, with the former a practice squad member for the Jets last year, and the latter, a rookie
Taylor, who recently turned 36, has been in the league since 2011, and is the only returning quarterback from last year’s NFL roster. As a backup in 2024 for the Jets, Taylor appeared in two games, completing 17 of his 22 passes and tossing three touchdowns.
The veteran has previously played for six other teams, including as a full-time starter for the Bills in the mid 2010s. From 2015 to 2017, Taylor started 42 games for Buffalo and threw for over 3,000 yards twice. In 2017, he made the playoffs with the Bills.
When New York first signed Fields and named him the starter, Taylor seemed to take it with grace.
“We’ve been good friends throughout his time in the league,” Taylor said of Fields. “So I’m here to support and help the team win in any form or fashion, whether it’s me on the field or whether it’s me being able to shed some light and experience and coach guys through.
“Whether it’s in the quarterback room, or any other position. Any knowledge or experience that I can offer to the younger guys that helps the team win, at the end of the day, is what I’m here to do. I’m looking forward to doing that.”
