Oregon State fires coach Trent Bray after 0-7 start: Source

Oregon State fired coach Trent Bray on Sunday after a loss to Wake Forest dropped the Beavers to 0-7, a source briefed on the situation said.

Oregon State is off to its worst start to a season since 1991. The Beavers are the only FBS team with seven losses, and Bray fired his special teams coordinator last week amid the team’s struggles on that side of the ball.

Bray’s buyout is a bit less than $4 million, but it will be paid out over installments for the next two years and would be reduced by the salary of Bray’s next coaching job, per the contract.

In just his second season as head coach, Bray, 43, had a 5-14 overall record. He was promoted from defensive coordinator after Jonathan Smith left the Beavers for Michigan State. The Beavers went 8-4 and finished fourth in the Pac-12 in 2023, Smith’s final season, but took a turn with the collapse of the Pac-12.

Bray, an Oregon State linebacker from 2002 to 2005, was the Beavers’ defensive coordinator for 2 1/2 seasons and was in his 11th season on staff. He served a two-year stint at Oregon State from 2012 to 2014 before returning in 2018.

The Beavers host Lafayette, an FCS team, next Saturday.
