OnePlus 15 teaser details tough ceramic coating that laughs at iPhone 17’s ‘scratchgate’

OnePlus started delivering official details about its next smartphone last week, but we had yet to see a full glimpse at the company’s latest redesign. If you’ve been wondering exactly what the OnePlus 15 might look like, well, wonder no more — we finally have official renders that show off practically every inch of this device in an all-new shade.

This morning, OnePlus confirmed its next smartphone is headed for a global launch in the coming weeks, and it’ll be featured in a new “Sand Storm” edition that the brand refers to as “dune-colored.” The OnePlus 15 will pair its next marquee colorway with “aerospace-grade Micro-Arc Oxidation” applied to the aluminum frame and camera module. That’s all paired with a new ceramic coating that is apparently tougher than both aluminum and titanium, and a fiberglass back panel.

It looks pretty nice, as far as off-white smartphones are concerned, and I’m pretty excited to get my hands on one post-launch just to see how excellent it actually feels in the hand. OnePlus China teased a few additional details on its Weibo account as well (h/t The Verge), including 1.15mm bezels surrounding the display and an “ultra-comfortable grip,” presumably due, in large part, to its redesigned chassis. OnePlus China also put out additional renders of the device from all sorts of angles, and you can check those out below.

OnePlus is announcing these new protective materials right as another aluminum-based flagship is having durability concerns of its own. Apple has faced some criticism over the past couple of weeks towards damage that early iPhone 17 Pro adopters are seeing around the camera plateau, something OnePlus clearly hopes to avoid with its next phone. Whether this holds up to regular use, of course, all depends on how the device ages once it’s in the hands of actual users.

While we still don’t know exactly when the OnePlus 15 is set for its grand debut, it does seem like we’re due for an earlier launch than usual. OnePlus has already confirmed its using Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 alongside its plans for a global rollout. While the company usually brings its phones to North America in January, don’t be surprised if you can find this device sitting on store shelves just in time for the holidays.
