Earlier this month, we received some troubling news that Jordan Peele‘s fourth feature film, previously scheduled for release in October 2026, had been removed from the calendar.
Variety reported the guild strikes had something to do with it when it was first dated for Christmas 2024, and though Peele suggested he knew exactly what he had in mind for his next movie, he’s still at work on the project and has yet to roll cameras.
So what has Peele been up to? Beyond the release of the football-themed horror movie “Him” that Peele produced, we got a taste of another secretive horror project on Tuesday with an unlikely collaborator: Hideo Kojima.
Kojima is the creator of the classic “Metal Gear Solid” franchise, but also the “Death Stranding” games that IndieWire has been big fans of for their striking cinematic qualities. His new project, in which he collaborated with Peele, is “OD,” and the game’s first teaser shares just one terrifying scene from the first-person point of view. The game stars Sophia Lillis, Udo Kier, and Hunter Schafer, and we’re even curious if that’s the cast for Peele’s next film.
The teaser, below, is pretty creepy. It shows a playable sequence in which the protagonist, via a first-person perspective, is given a red card with instructions through a door, then proceeds to a shrine of candles that the player must light one by one, with each creating screams and loud knocks at a door as you proceed. We then cut to a close-up of Lillis as a giant, dark figure approaches her and clutches her face in monstrous gray hands.
Unfortunately, it’s hard to know how much, if any, of Peele’s specific fingerprints are on this particular teaser. The trailer doesn’t have his name anywhere, and Kojima, in a livestream announcing this project, said that “there’s a different kind of fear Jordan will do; mine is the fear of the knock. I’m really afraid of the knock sound!” It suggests that Peele’s contribution might be for an entirely different chapter of the game.
Regardless, the Kojima-Peele collab is an exciting one. Some of the commenters on the trailer alluded to a game like the universally acclaimed “Elden Ring,” which George R. R. Martin co-wrote and is now itself being adapted into a movie. Peele was also at one point rumored to be directing a film adaptation of “Death Stranding,” but “Pig” and “A Quiet Place: Day One” filmmaker Michael Sarnoski will handle that instead.
The other, more astute comparison might be to another game Kojima co-produced with legendary horror director Guillermo del Toro. The game was called “P.T.,” and it was meant to be a “playable teaser” (P.T.) for a new installment in the “Silent Hill” video game franchise. Released in 2014 for free on PlayStation 4, the brief game drew significant acclaim, but when the planned franchise was canceled, distributor Konami famously removed the game from the PlayStation Store and made it impossible to reinstall.
For that reason, commenters on the trailer for “OD” joked that the title actually translates to “Only Demo.”
