Nvidia (NVDA) Expands UK AI Footprint with Large-Scale GPU Deployment

Nvidia (NVDA) said it will deploy tens of thousands of AI GPUs across the UK, marking one of its largest international projects so far. CEO Jensen Huang described the plan as part of “sovereign AI,” where countries build AI on their own soil to support local industry, science, and jobs.

The highlight of this plan is Stargate UK, a project announced by Nvidia, Nscale, and OpenAI. It is expected to become one of Europe’s leading AI hubs, with large numbers of Nvidia GPUs set to go online from 2026. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the project will speed up research, improve productivity, and support growth in the UK economy.

Partnerships Power UK AI Expansion

Alongside Stargate UK, Microsoft (MSFT) is making its own major AI investment in the country. The company will build the UK’s most powerful supercomputer in Loughton, using 24,000 of Nvidia’s new Grace Blackwell Ultra chips. The system will run on Microsoft’s Azure cloud, giving local researchers and businesses access to cutting-edge computing resources.

The announcement comes as President Donald Trump is on a state visit to the UK, adding to its geopolitical significance. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the US and UK need to stay at the front of global AI and cloud innovation.

NVDA Expands Quantum and Research Ties

Beyond AI data centers, Nvidia is also strengthening ties with UK universities and startups in quantum computing. Projects include GPU-powered error-correction research at the University of Edinburgh and hybrid AI-quantum networks with ORCA Computing and Imperial College London.

These efforts show Nvidia’s push beyond chips into new areas that mix AI and quantum computing.
