Nothing shows off Android 16 update and its new features [Video]

Ahead of its open beta launch “coming soon,” Nothing is showing off its Android 16 update, Nothing OS 4.0, and its new features and designs.

Nothing OS 4.0 was announced alongside the Phone (3) earlier this year, but up until now, we haven’t seen the design. In a new post and video, though, Nothing is detailing what’s new in its Android 16 update.

Nothing OS 4.0 is firstly a visual update, with a “sharper, more thoughtful design across every layer.” In particular, Nothing points to new lock screen clocks, an updated Quick Settings panel, and other tweaks throughout Nothing’s apps and more.

There’s also a new “Extra Dark” theme which has a true black theme as opposed to Android’s typical dark grey theme.

Multitasking is getting an upgrade with floating app icons, while Nothing says to expect improvements to both general performance and the camera, the latter coming from the “TrueLens Engine.”

Finally, there’s a new AI dashboard that breaks down how you’re using Nothing’s AI features. Specifically, it breaks down which AI models are being used by Nothing’s AI features, including Whisper, GPT-4o, and Gemini Flash.

Nothing says that Nothing OS 4.0 will be rolling out “soon,” but there’s no specific date. It’s also likely that this will start on Phone (3), but the update will eventually make its way to Phone (2), Phone (2a), Phone (3a), and CMF phones per Nothing’s current support commitments.
