Universal must be having déjà vu this weekend, with Nobody 2 underperforming at the box office in its debut. Mere weeks ago, the studio released M3GAN 2.0, which tanked commercially with under $40 million worldwide, against a reported budget of $20 million. It was admitted that everybody involved, including producers Blumhouse, might have overestimated the pandemic-era popularity of the first M3GAN, which made over $180 million worldwide and increased its cult of fans on home video. They seem to have overestimated the first Nobody as well.
Released in 2021, the first movie grossed almost $60 million worldwide, against a reported budget of $16 million. It was a stressful time to be a moviegoer, with theaters still operating under restrictions in some cases, and the vaccines not having been fully rolled out. Nobody came and went between waves of the pandemic, instantly setting a sequel into motion. The new movie sees Bob Odenkirk back as an assassin daylighting as a suburban dad, with Timo Tjahjanto at the helm. The filmmaker replaced Ilya Naishuller, who recently directed the Prime Video film Heads of State.
With under $10 million in its domestic debut, and another $5 million from overseas markets, Nobody 2 has generated $14 million worldwide in its first weekend. It cost a reported $25 million to produce, but it’s clear that it isn’t witnessing the sort of movie-on-movie spike that John Wick: Chapter 2 did. Produced by the first film’s co-director David Leitch, and co-written by John Wick scribe Derek Kolstad, Nobody 2 earned positive reviews. It’s sitting at a “certified fresh” 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and an even better, “verified hot” 89% audience score on the aggregator website.
‘Nobody 2’ Nearly Beat Guy Ritchie’s $50 Million War Drama
Despite its underwhelming numbers, Nobody 2 nearly outgrossed the entire lifetime haul of Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant in three days flat. The war drama, which earned some of the best reviews of Ritchie’s recent career, concluded its run with $21 million worldwide, against a reported budget of $50 million. The movie received a Prime Video release in multiple regions, as did Ritchie’s spy caper Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, and his World War II romp The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. You can watch Nobody 2 in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
