Nintendo releases new “Close to You” video, now with Pikmin

Nintendo has revealed the mystery behind this week’s “Close to You” animated short that perplexed fans: And, yes, as many have theorized, it’s all related to Pikmin.

On Wednesday, Nintendo released an updated version of the “Close to You” short, but instead of invisible beings manipulating the rattle and blocks in a child’s nursery, dozens of Pikmin are visibly shown to be responsible for the minor chaos. Red, yellow, and blue Pikmin are shown running around the room, moving things to and fro, and battling over the baby’s pacifier.

In other words: Pikmin fans called it. On Tuesday, when Nintendo initially released “Close to You” through its Nintendo Today app, and then later on traditional social media channels, Pikmin fans correctly identified musical themes from the franchise in the video. Some thought they even spotted a Pikmin or two blurred in the background.

“Close to You” further supports the notion that Pikmin are invisible to the naked eye. (The Pikmin Bloom website says so outright.) But maybe babies can see them? The mom in “Close to You” certainly doesn’t appear to notice or care that her child’s bedroom is infested with Pikmin.

There’s one question that still remains: Why did Nintendo go to the effort of making two Pikmin videos? That’s still unknown. Maybe there’s a new Pikmin game on the way — or a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Pikmin 4 with extra baby-related antics. The second release of “Close to You” doesn’t end with any kind of announcement or teaser of a full-fledged project.

As we noted yesterday, the animated short(s) may just be another example of Nintendo being Nintendo. “Close to You” may just be another entry in the many Pikmin animated shorts (and comics) that Nintendo has produced for the franchise — which just happens to turn 25 years old next year.

We still haven’t received comment from Nintendo on the who, what, and why of “Close to You,” but if the company does come out of hiding on this one, we’ll update this story with new details.
