Nicole Kidman alluded to a possible split from her husband of 19 years, Keith Urban, before their separation was made public. While chatting with Vogue for its November issue, Kidman spoke about the unpredictability of life — and how suddenly things can change.
“How many times do you have to be taught that you think you know where your life is going and then it isn’t going in that direction?” she told Vogue writer Wendell Steavenson, who interviewed her for the cover story. Steavenson, at the end of the profile, added that news of Kidman and Urban’s separation broke a few weeks after this story had gone to press. While she had “guessed as much” while talking to Kidman, Steavenson “didn’t want to pry.”
Kidman doesn’t explicitly delve into the complexities of her personal life or the status of her relationship with Urban during the Vogue interview, but she does tell the publication that she turns to acting to help deal with the highs and lows of life.
“I put it in my work. That’s the beauty of what I do. There’s a place for some of this to explode, implode, process, discover,” she said. Kidman even hinted at the possibility of writing professionally as an outlet too, given the “wealth of things” she’s “compiling in my little psyche.”
Kidman has kept a busy work schedule with her upcoming slate of projects. She recently wrapped production on Practical Magic 2, in which she stars alongside Sandra Bullock. Set to debut on Sept. 18, 2026, the film is a follow-up to 1998’s Practical Magic, a witchy rom-com that follows sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who hail from a long line of powerful witches. In addition to starring in the forthcoming flick Holland and reprising her starring role in Big Little Lies, Kidman will also appear in two TV shows: Prime Video’s Scarpetta and Apple TV+’s Margo’s Got Money Troubles. Urban, according to People, reportedly became less supportive of Kidman’s acting career in the lead-up to their separation.

Aside from her work, Kidman also revealed that she has a close-knit group of friends she can lean on for support. The Babygirl star told Vogue that she has certain “ride-or-die” female friendships in Nashville, where she resides. Counted among her ride-or-dies is Kidman’s Big Little Lies costar and Nashville neighbor, Reese Witherspoon.
Kidman’s support system appears to extend beyond her friends: Kidman also has younger daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, whom she shares with Urban, to lean on. Kidman — sporting new wispy breakup bangs — was joined by her two girls at Matthieu Blazy’s debut presentation for Chanel during Paris Fashion Week earlier this week. Presenting a united front, the trio was hand in hand as they posed for photographers.
The actress, who also shares daughter Bella, 32, and son Connor, 30, with ex-husband Tom Cruise, is listed as Sunday and Faith’s “primary residential parent,” according to a recent People report. Court documents state that Kidman will reportedly spend 306 days a year with the girls, while Urban will spend 59 days with them.
Kidman’s interview with Vogue is the first to be published since she filed for divorce from Urban on Sept. 30. The Nine Perfect Strangers star listed their date of separation as the date of the divorce filing and cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their breakup, according to court documents from last week.
