A Russian influencer’s attempt at going viral ended with a trip to the hospital and a fractured spine after she took on the viral Nicki Minaj “High School” pose TikTok challenge.
Mariana Barutkina, a 32-year-old mother and content creator, was reportedly only eight weeks postpartum when she decided to recreate the global icon‘s squatting pose from the 2013 music video. The iconic pose has taken over TikTok, with celebrities like Ciara, Angela Simmons, Porsha Williams and more getting involved.
In the now-viral Instagram post shared last month, Barutkina is seen attempting the pose in stilettos on her kitchen island, atop two cans of baby formula and a saucepan. A woman was standing nearby to help, but after Barutkina lost her balance, she went down hard, crashing to the floor as the camera kept rolling.
“TREND OR WHOLE BELL?” she captioned the video (translated from Russian), later revealing she suffered an “uncomplicated compression flexion fracture” of the spine. It was meant to be her first shoot for a new blog, but instead, she ended up leaving the doctor’s office with an injury.
“I decided to start blogging, the first content shooting – and here I am leaving the doctor diagnosed with “T9 compression bending uncomplicated fracture of the body” she explained. “The irony? Karma? Or just life, which always tests our strength at the most unexpected moment.”
Though Barutkina has opted out of doing press about the accident, she’s fully aware of her newfound fame. In another post showing all of the attention she’d gotten from media, she wrote: “Because of one video, which was unsuccessfully filmed, I woke up a popular person. More than 50 people sent me my reel from different publications today…”
“P.S. There will be no reports and communication with journalists!” she declared. “Whoever worries about my child is also calm, he has two nannies and while I was filming one of them was with him.” She did thank all of her supporters for making her “popular” and for their concerns and comments. “I’m doing great, following the guidelines and now living in ‘star’ status,” she concluded.
