Nick Saban is sorry.
Not long after the former Alabama coach said revenge is not supposed to be factor but will be when the Tide hosts Vanderbilt, he apologized Saturday on ESPN’s “College GameDay” for his 2024 remarks prior to Alabama heading to Nashville to meet – and lose – to the Vanderbilt Commodores.
During a 2024 appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” the former Alabama coach explained, “The only place you play in the SEC that’s not hard to play is Vanderbilt.”
After Diego Pavia and the Commodores defeated then-NO. 1 Alabama 40-35, Vanderbilt played the quote on the video board as fans stormed the field.
On Saturday, a light-hearted Saban apologized to Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer for the comment. DeBoer laughed before getting serious about the task at hand.
“In everything you do, you have to learn from your experiences, and, obviously, the positive ones, those are easy to learn from,” DeBoer said when reflecting on the loss. “You have to learn from your negative ones as well. Our guys have done a great job of taking from that and taken from what we experienced this year, too. There’s been some up and downs. … We’re focusing on us, and that’s really where we have kept it.”
That’s been the mantra all season, too, since the Tide lost in Week 1 to Florida State.
“We really just went back to the basics and tried to keep it simple and not overthink it,” DeBoer said. “There’s an edge that got created. Unfortunately, there was negative energy that we channeled into the right things, and we just went back to work. The preparation day after day. These guys want to make sure they do it for each other. They don’t want to be the one that lets down the team. It’s a close-knit group. We have taken that one. One day at a time.”
