NFL insider says the quiet part out loud about Chiefs’ sluggish start

The Kansas City Chiefs are 0-2 for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era. It’s a strange feeling for sure but even with the Chiefs being winless through the first two games of the season, fans should not be thinking that the sky is falling for this team.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated backed up that notion in his latest report, pointing out all of the reasons why people shouldn’t count the Chiefs out just yet. Breer touched on how the Chiefs are lacking at wide receiver with Rashee Rice suspended and Xavier Worthy injured, which is quite notable considering this team’s offensive shortcomings in their first two games.

Breer’s big message to everyone, however, was to be patient.

“I would just preach patience with this right now. I’m not saying the Chiefs are going to win a fourth Super Bowl like this when we get to February. I didn’t pick them to win the Super Bowl. But I do think that they’re going to be there at the end, whether it’s the divisional round, the championship round. I do think they’re going to be in the mix at the end. And that’s based on demonstrated history. I think there are a lot like the Patriots used to be where they use the early parts of the year to develop their team. Some years it looks better than others. It doesn’t look great right now because of the suspension and injury issues that they’ve got on the offensive side of the ball. But once they get Xavier Worthy back healthy, up and running opposite Hollywood Brown, once they get Rashee Rice after the six game suspension, I think we’re looking at something completely different.”

Albert Breer urges Chiefs fans to be patient amid 0-2 start

This is truly is the right way of looking at the situation. The Chiefs are 0-2, yes, but they’ve lost to a division rival and playoff team from a season ago in the Chargers and the reigning Super Bowl champions in the Eagles. If this were later in the year and K.C. lost these two games in a row, it’d be annoying but people would not think the sky was falling.

Breer also likened these Chiefs to the Patriots and cited how the early part of the season is when they evaluate what kind of team they’re going to have. That’s what Kansas City is doing here. It’s not fun to go 0-2 and have people claiming the dynasty is over but we’re two weeks in and patience needs to be something that Chiefs fans have if they want to make it through this season with their sanity intact.

The Chiefs will hopefully get Worthy back from injury soon (and Jalen Royals as well) and we know Rice is coming back in Week 7. Not having two of your three starting wideouts is always going to make things trickier and that’s exactly what the Chiefs are dealing with right now.

But, like Breer said, when those guys come back, this team should look completely different and like the one we’re more accustomed to watching. It’s a marathon, y’all, not a sprint.
