Terry McLaurin and the Washington Commanders just can’t seem to work out their ongoing contract standoff. An NFL insider placed the blame firmly on the shoulders of one man for the first time.
It wasn’t McLaurin. It wasn’t general manager Adam Peters, either. It was the men at loggerheads with the Commanders from the moment this saga began.
Buddy Baker and Tony Bonagura from Exclusive Sports Group are representing McLaurin. Their initial asking price was so steep that Peters reportedly considered ending the first round of negotiations right on the spot. After that, the wideout has been behaving very out of character with holdouts, a hold-in back at the facility, and even a trade request.

This led Mike Jones from The Athletic to wonder whether McLaurin is getting sound advice. He also said during an appearance with Kevin Sheehan on The Team 980 that his conversations with people around the league hold weight to this claim.
“I worry about the advice that [Terry McLaurin’s] getting from his agent. From talking to a number of people, it sounds like it’s too bad he doesn’t have somebody else in his ear because it doesn’t seem like he’s getting a lot of wise counsel on this.”

This is something fans have speculated for some time. McLaurin is trusting his representation; that’s what he’s paying them for. At the same time, speculation is rising about whether the agents are in over their heads.
The whole thing is a complete mess. Both sides are dug into their respective stances, and McLaurin is suffering.
Peters is a ruthless negotiator who always puts the team’s best interests at heart. The agents don’t want to lose face after coming this far. That makes it difficult to predict when some middle ground will be reached.
Hopefully, Peters and McLaurin’s agents are still working on the contract. There’s been nothing new to share from the club, but the wideout speaking to Washington’s front-office leader at practice this week left hope that the relationship wasn’t completely fractured.
The body language wasn’t great, but they were talking.
Fans are growing weary, and rightfully so. They want McLaurin back on the field with just over three weeks until the Commanders take the field for their regular-season opener against the New York Giants. They also know that Peters is a business-first guy running the football operation with professionalism and the future in mind at all times.
But if nothing gets agreed soon, who knows what McLaurin’s agents will suggest next.
