Liverpool entered the summer transfer window with Alexander Isak their dream striker target as sporting director Richard Hughes and the recruitment team looked to overhaul the attack for manager Arne Slot ahead of 2025-26’s Premier League title defence.
The question was never whether Liverpool wanted Isak. It was only ever if he was the Newcastle striker was a plausible target and whether their interest would ever amount to a formal move for the 25-year-old Sweden international. Today, it’s done just that.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein and with confirmation from the Newcastle side by way of The Mail’s Craig Hope, a formal bid has both been put in by Liverpool and rejected by Newcastle. The first bid, if it came, was always going to be rejected.
While full monetary details of the bid are yet to emerge, it’s said to fall short of Newcastle’s previously reported £150M valuation placed on the player. For their part, Liverpool have previously signalled that they would be happy to pay around £120M for Isak.
The player is currently in Spain training at his former club, Real Sociedad, and is pushing for the transfer. Isak is believed to have made clear to Newcastle the 2024-25 season would be his last after the club withdrew a contract offer with improved wages last year.
Further dysfunction behind the scenes at the club, who are currently without a permanent sporting director and have failed to sign the majority of their transfer targets this summer, has further convinced Isak that his time at Newcastle has fully run its course.
