Flights in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport were experiencing significant delays Thursday after a ground stop caused by communication issues in the lead up to the Labor Day weekend.
Flights were temporarily ground-stopped Thursday morning due to equipment issues at the FAA, ABC7 reported.
By 12:30 p.m. the ground stop was lifted at both Newark Airport and nearby Teterboro Airport, but the delays continued, WPIX reported.
“The FAA cancelled the ground stop and is now slowing flights into Newark Liberty International Airport due to equipment issues that affected some radio frequencies in the Philadelphia TRACON area that handles Newark arrivals and departures,” according to a statement from the FAA. “We are investigating the cause.”
Delays at Newark Airport were still averaging more than two hours on inbound flights as of 1 p.m., according to FlightAware.com. The average delays on arrivals were 31 minutes to just under two hours.
The delays follow a series of problems at Newark Airport in the spring that were caused in part by continuing shortages of air traffic controllers and a series of outages at the air traffic control center handling flights to and from the airport.
Those delays were made worse by runway work, which limited the amount of traffic in and out of the airport.
