The New York Giants have reportedly released quarterback Tommy DeVito.
NFL Insider Jordan Schultz is reporting that the fan-favorite former UDFA quarterback is among the moves made by the Giants as they winnow their roster down to their final 53-man roster. There had been some speculation that the Giants could try to trade DeVito, but the market apparently never materialized.
The Giants originally signed DeVito — a hometown hero from Cedar Grove who played for Don Bosco Prep — as an undrafted free agent from Illinois after the 2023 NFL Draft. He flashed upside in his rookie preseason and became an overnight sensation when he was forced into a starting role thanks to injuries to Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor. The Giants won three straight games with DeVito at the helm, leading to a 6-11 finish on the year.
DeVito ultimately played in 12 games for the Giants, starting 8 and going 3-5 over the last two years.
He was the Giants’ fourth quarterback throughout the 2025 training camp and preseason, but acquitted himself well. He had a sterling performance against the New England Patriots in the final game of the preseason, completing 17 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns. His play led to speculation that the Giants may carry four quarterbacks into the season, and even suggestions that the team could move on from Jameis Winston and keep DeVito as the primary backup to Russell Wilson.
Instead, DeVito was cut five days later.
Of course, it’s still possible that he could be signed to the Giants’ practice squad. However, he will need to pass through the waiver wire without being claimed. Teams like the New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, and Dallas Cowboys all have needs at backup quarterback, and could be threats to claim DeVito.
Hopefully the Giants will be able to bring him back as a practice squad player.
