Over the past few generations, Arc System Works has really established itself as a premier fighting game developer across the board, but things may not be going as planned for the studio right now.
A recent report claims ArcSys has canceled a new Guilty Gear project they had in development.
The report comes by way of Insider Gaming, which claims anonymous sources told the outlet about the game’s cancelation.
There’s little other details revealed about the project besides that the decision to stop development allegedly happened within the past few weeks.
So it’s unclear if this title was meant to be the sequel to Guilty Gear Strive, a mobile game, or some sort of other spin-off for the franchise.
When asked about the future of the series, one source reportedly told Insider Gaming that it was “back to the drawing board” for Guilty Gear.
Guilty Gear Strive first launched in 2021 and has been the most successful title in the series’ history as the first to ever cross one million sales.
To date, Strive has reached over 3 million players as of July 2024 with the fourth season of DLC support still ongoing for the game.
Producer Ken Miyauchi recently promised “something big and exciting” for Guilty Gear after Unika and the upcoming Lucy though it’s unclear if that means a Season 5 is on the way or something else.
Guilty Gear Creator Daisuke Ishiwatari recently revealed his new game that he’s actively working on, but it’s not a fighting game.
This comes as ArcSys is aiming to branch out more from the fighter genre into the mid-range gaming space.
The company also has its hands busy with Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising and the upcoming Hunter x Hunter: Nen Impact as well as Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls next year, so they clearly aren’t looking to move away from their big breadwinners.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see what exactly the future holds for the future of Guilty Gear, but we probably won’t be hearing about the next steps after Strive for at least a few more years — especially if the team is essentially starting over again.
Since this is an unconfirmed report, however, it should also be taken with a healthy grain of salt.
