Hot off the success of KPop Demon Hunters, the animated breakout that has emerged as Netflix’s biggest hit ever, the streamer might just have a new franchise on its hands. It’s still unclear whether director Rian Johnson has further Knives Out mysteries planned beyond the upcoming third installment, but, in case he doesn’t, Netflix can now count on more follow-ups to this week’s The Thursday Murder Club. Based on the best-selling book by Richard Osman, the movie immediately jumped to the top of Netflix’s viewership charts, dethroning KPop Demon Hunters from the number one spot.
According to FlixPatrol, The Thursday Murder Club has been the number one movie on Netflix globally for two days straight. It has accumulated a total of over 1,600 points on the platform so far. KPop Demon Hunters, on the other hand, slipped to the number two spot. The animated mega-hit has accumulated a total of nearly 55,000 points on FlixPatrol. Directed by Chris Columbus, who has developed a reputation for founding franchises, The Thursday Murder Club stars Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan, and Celia Imrie, along with David Tennant, Richard E. Grant, and Jonathan Pryce.
The Thursday Murder Club opened to mostly positive reviews. It’s currently sitting at a 76% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. In her review, Collider’s Maggie Lovitt wrote, “It’s Only Murders in the Building meets Book Club in all the best ways, and Netflix should go ahead and greenlight the next four novels to be adapted as quickly as possible.” The movie follows a group of retirees who pass time by trying to solve cold cases. But when someone actually ends up dead in their facility, they turn to the sleuthing skills they’ve developed to crack the case.
Murder Mystery Fans Can Look Forward to a Major Release this December
Columbus previously launched franchises such as Home Alone, Harry Potter, and Percy Jackson. Osman’s original novel has spawned three further installments: “The Man Who Died Twice,” “The Bullet That Missed,” and “The Last Devil to Die.” A fifth book is set to hit the shelves this year. Meanwhile, Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery will be released by Netflix in December, after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and presumably getting some sort of theatrical release afterward. You can watch The Thursday Murder Club on Netflix, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
